Five Areas to Declutter Before the Holiday Rush Begins

As the holidays approach, life gets busier and our to-do lists get longer. Before the decorations come out and guests start arriving, take a little time to clear the clutter that’s quietly adding stress to your space. These five areas are small but mighty and a quick reset now will make your home feel lighter, calmer, and ready for the busy season ahead.
The Entryway or Drop Zone
This is the first place you see when you walk in and often the first area that can spiral out of control. Shoes, backpacks, mail, and bags can pile up fast — and that visual clutter sets the tone for your entire home.
Add a basket or tray for incoming mail; if you have a have a mudroom with cubbies, I like to add a basket for outgoing returns for busy moms; if there is a dedicated space for these by the door, they’re contained and more likely to make it out the door. Create a designated hook or bin for each family member if possible. Keep ONLY seasonal shoes and outerwear nearby, out with the sandals and light, summer raincoats.
A clear entryway not only looks welcoming but also helps you mentally transition from the outside world to home.
Kitchen Counters
The heart of your home will soon be full of baking, cooking, and entertaining. Clearing counters now means more ease now and less chaos later. Start by removing items that don’t belong: paperwork, school projects, random items that mount up and designate homes for them elsewhere. If you use your counters for everyday items, corral them in pretty baskets or trays (huge fan of trays!) to make tidying easier, it also designates a literal boundary to keep them from overflowing. Remember: the less you keep out, the more space you have to cook, serve, and enjoy your guests and family.
Guest Room or Multipurpose Space
If your guest room doubles as a storage area or office, reclaim it early. Sort through anything that’s drifted in over the year such as extra decor, off-season clothes, or things you just don’t know what to do with. Once the space is clear, make the effort to keep it that way. Even if you’re not planning for overnight guests, a ready guest room eliminates last-minute stress if the situation arises.
Living Room Surfaces
Your living room should be a place to relax, not to stare at piles of stuff. Look at every surface with fresh eyes - coffee tables, shelves, side tables and remove excess clutter. Too many pieces can make the space feel busy instead of inviting and relaxing. Keep your accessories simple and intentional with fewer but meaningful items; you’ll be amazed how much more peaceful the living room feels once it can breathe again.
Closets and Coat Storage
At this time of year, guests often come with bulky coats, bags, and gifts, so now’s the time to make space. Go through your coat closet and let go of what no longer fits or serves you and your family. Store off-season items in labeled bins higher or lower if possible. A tidy and organized closet not only looks great, it helps you (and your guests) find what you need quickly.
A Fresh Start for the Busy Season
Decluttering before the holidays isn’t just about having a tidy home, it’s about creating space for what really matters: connection and joy. Start small, tackle one area at a time, and celebrate the difference even the smallest of efforts can make.
