Gifting Outside of the Box

I really try to be intentional about my gift-giving and I truly believe in experiences over “things”; lots have been hits and there have been misses (looking at you, ManCrate) but does anyone need another tie, toy, or bottle of perfume? Below I’ll share some outside of the box ideas that lead to experiences or enrichment instead of clutter…

Experiences

  • Concert or musical tickets (these are MAJOR memories for my daughter and me); although they can be pricy, it’s a great way to celebrate an upcoming “big” birthday like 13 or 16 or 40 or 50 for your bestie.

  • Paint your own pottery classes are always fun and something to anticipate on a rainy day with a younger kiddo and who doesn’t cherish a hand-painted sculpture?

  • Immersive pop-ups such as Color Factory or Seismique are super cool for older tweens and teens; It might be fun to get with a mom friend and do a group gift. There are now fun indoor golf clubs (Holey Moley in Houston) or Top Golf to gift your hubby for a guys afternoon out.

Subscriptions and Memberships

  • I know I may be in the minority but because my husband and I still love print magazines. Subscription Addiction is great for specialty subscriptions; I have gifted Sport Fisherman, I love interior design magazines, but there’s also Bon Appetit, Travel and Leasure, and many other fun ones!

  • Zoo or museum memberships: If you have younger kids, wrap up a stuffed animal or geode to represent the meaning of the membership and create excitement about future trips.

  • What about Audible credits for your best friend or a parent? A Barnes and Noble membership?

Note: There are tons of food, wine, and beauty subscription boxes to be had but this area can be tricky, in my experience. I’ve seen too many clients that forget about supplement, wine, or busy box/toy subscriptions that they forget to cancel, leading to LOTS of waste (in money and “things”. Read the fine print and stay on top of possible automatic renewal dates.

The Gift of Learning

  • Cooking classes for aspiring chefs and food lovers; they have couples and teen classes at Sur la Table, for example.

  • Masterclass is a yearly membership platform with SO many types of mini classes from tech, entrepreneurship, film making, cooking, the list goes on and on.

  • STEM or coding classes for tweens and younger teens are a nice idea as well as dance or crafting classes.

This is by no means an exhaustive list but hopefully it can inspire you to think about some creative gifts that create lasting memories that, in my humble opinion, are what giving and sharing is all about. As always, wishing you the very best, xoxo
