Seamless Seasonal Switch: How to Transition Your Closet from Summer to Fall

Well, the temps here in Texas aren’t quite crisp yet but it’s time to ditch the linen and softer hues to a more fall-like palette now that October is in full swing. Whether you store your summer and fall items in the same closet (like I do) or have other options such as a secondary closet, a (let's make this seamless) seasonal closet switch can ease your transition into the the cooler months with, well, ease.
A seasonal swap isn’t just about changing out your clothes, it’s about creating a functional, organized space that makes getting dressed easier (goals, rights?). Before bringing in sweaters and boots, take everything out of your closet. Wipe down shelves, vacuum the floor, and dust rods. A fresh, clean space sets the tone for the new season.
Edit Summer Clothes and Store with Care
As you pack away sundresses, shorts, and swimsuits (or move them to the bottom or back of your closet), be selective. Donate anything you no longer see yourself wearing next year, especially if it doesn’t fit well or no longer feels like “you.” Next spring, when you're bringing out what you've put away, you'll be glad to took care of this now.
If you do pack away your summer wardrobe, use breathable bins or garment bags; think hanging muslin bags or zippered canvas bins. Avoid cardboard and plastic, which can attract pests or trap moisture and avoid keeping your clothes in plastic dry cleaning bags, they trap chemicals which can damage your clothes over time.
Curate Your Fall Wardrobe and Create Easy Access Zones
Before putting your fall pieces front and center, think about your lifestyle: Do you need more work-appropriate layers? Weekend casual looks? Special occasion outfits? Be intentional about what earns closet space. This also gives you a starting point if you plan on shopping for new items.
Place everyday items like jeans, sweaters, or whatever you wear on the daily at eye level and place holiday wear, dressier pieces, or bulky coats higher up or toward the sides. The easier it is to grab what you actually wear, the smoother your mornings will be. Note: when stacking sweaters and/or jeans, try to avoid stacks that are too tall or you’ll have trouble accessing things in the middle, which leads to a mess unless you’re willing to keep up with the high stacks and refolding (trust me on this one!).
Refresh Your Accessories
Swap out straw bags for leather totes, sandals for sneakers or booties, and pull out your scarves or wraps. I hang my scarves with trouser hangers to save space but if you have the room to fold them in baskets or drawers, by all means do. The point is easy accessibility.
In Closing…
Transitioning your closet doesn’t have to feel overwhelming! This is a chance to reset, refresh, and get intentional with your fall and winter wardrobe. I personally love this reset time which allows me to see what I have and put fresh looks together for a new season. With storing summer items thoughtfully and making fall clothing accessible, you’ll save time, reduce stress, and have a chance to go into the season with more confidence and ease. I see that I've used the word ease multiple times here, which is what I crave and what I'm wishing for you!
